In David’s Own Words

Up until the time I was about 40, everything in my life seemed pretty “normal”. I had gone to “normal” schools, been a member of a “normal” community, followed all the “normal” rules, such as getting married, having some kids, owning a home with a modest mortgage, and so on and so on. According to all of the “normal” metrics, I was on the path to success, so I should have been happy. But I was not happy; on the contrary, I was downright miserable. In fact, I suddenly woke up to the fact that I was very resentful and angry. I was not doing what I wanted to do—I was living someone else’s life! I had been cheated. Where was all the happiness and success that was promised to me for all I had done to fit in, follow the rules, conform to the expectations and demands of everyone outside of me? How on earth did this happen to me? And why?!

As I became more aware of the depth of my disappointment, disillusionment, anger, resentment—and yes, even shame—I also became aware of the damage I was inadvertently doing to the people in my life I cared about the most…especially my children. So, I did the only thing I could figure out to do: I ran away! That’s right, I escaped the environment that created all this pain for me. I ended up in Northern California—a new job, a new environment, and a new start. But alas, it didn’t take long for me to realize that the pain I was running from came along with me, only now it actually seemed worse than it was before. It got so bad at one point that I contemplated “pulling the plug”, just dumping everything down the drain so to speak. But the thought of my children kept tugging at me. It was bad enough that I headed out of town and left them with their Mom; I just couldn’t bring myself to end it all. My father had left me when I was only nine years old, so I knew the kind of pain they would feel if I disappeared completely. I loved my children very deeply, so I had to do something so I could stay connected to them, even if I was living 1600 miles away from them.

Well, my seemingly impetuous escape to Northern California turned out to be a powerful blessing in disguise, because I was serendipitously connected to events, circumstances, and people who helped guide me to the support I needed to begin my healing. Therapists, teachers, workshop leaders, seminar trainers. They all did their part to help me learn what I needed to learn in order to rise above my past situations and begin to see myself in a whole new light. The more work I did, the more I connected to the truth of who I really am, and this helped me to repair and heal a lot of the damage I had done in past relationships—including with my children. And with this continuing growth came a deep sense of compassion and forgiveness, not to mention lots of joy, as I connected to a deep and abiding sense of purpose for my life.

Today, I experience almost everything with a sense of gratitude and appreciation that never seemed possible before I made that choice to change my situation. Today, I focus all my energy on following my true Spiritual Purpose for Being and doing all that I can to help people improve their lives—before they end up in the pit of despair that had me in its clutches for so long.

Let me finish by saying this:

You are a divine, magnificent, unlimited Spiritual Being of light and love who happens to be sharing a Human Experience with everyone else on the planet. You have as much right as anyone to success, joy, and fulfillment. Don’t settle for less than you deserve just to fit in or conform to society’s expectations; instead, find the truth in your heart, remember who you really are, and let the world experience all of you.
