The Powerful Sense of Smell: Is IT making choices for you? w/WU Expert Ricki McKenna
March 21, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Join WU Featured Expert Ricki L McKenna, CN Functional Certified Nutritionist for a fascinating, live, interactive class all about aromas and your well-being.
Certain smells are linked to memories – this is where we will dive in. How is your life being affected by smells? Are you sensitive to certain smells? Are you attracted or repelled by certain aromas? Is anxiety, stress or anger triggered by a smell? Are you soothed and comforted by certain smells? Are you even aware of this? How can you improve your health with aromas?
Scientifically, the olfactory nerve (CN1) is the first of 12 cranial nerves located within the head. It relays sensory data to the brain, and it is responsible for the sense of smell. The nerve’s olfactory receptors are located within the mucosa of the nasal cavity. Since it is one of the shortest nerves in the human head, what you sniff in from your environment goes directly to your brain receptors (sensory), often without our choosing, and gets processed as smells.
Note: one of the first signs of Parkinson’s Disease is the loss of the sense of smell.

– Your sense of smell is the most powerful of your senses; how it enhances or detracts from food choices, perfumes, cleaners, people etc.
– Smell can attract or repel: your body and psyche remember smells and often connect them with people and experiences from childhood.
– You will learn to make the connection with why certain odors, smells, are attractive or repulsive and how smells effect our choices as adults.

Note: Aroma therapy has been used for centuries for healing and wellbeing. It can affect everything from anxiety, stress and sleep, to stimulating your immune system – pepping you up with peppermint. Rather than popping pills while in traffic, recall the smell of the delicious cup of coffee or tea you savored earlier in the morning (or are carrying in the car) and relax. The benefits are multifaceted and inexpensive compared with other therapies.
